So we mainly stick with Sonos for house music. But in these days were programming cost is harder to sell, we try to figure out ways that don't require programming and work natively. I don't know if that is what you are looking for. Of course if there are more than 32 zones, Sonos is not a good option. The IR and link to the Sonos app is for in case the Crestron module breaks, the client can still has a system he can use. We use a combination of IR, the Crestron Sonos module, and a link to the Sonos app on Crestron Go for Crestron integration. With Airplay 2, the client doesn't even need any app on their iPhone to play music in any combination of rooms. And most of our clients seem to just want to airplay. I know you don't like Sonos, but really I find it works best for clients that want to have some radio function. IR on the other hand always works and Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha all have a 3.5mm IR input - so no ugly flasher on the front that can fall off.

I've had to convert several projects we did years ago to use IR instead because some firmware update broke something. And here lately, Yamaha has broken many of the RS232 functions in their latest firmware updates. We have had issues with the RS232 ports/IP locking up requiring a reboot. For the most part, I have stopped using IP control and RS232 control too because manufacturers just don't put the effort in making it work right anymore. So we stopped using even the iRadio section because the things that made it great are no longer there. Now everybody seems to give you a list instead and the order of that list changes when the client modifies his favorites. Unfortunately, when Denon came out with their Heos feature, they removed all the features we used to love to use - namely fix radio presets.

And you could use the Zone 2 output to feed a house audio system, control it, and if necessary, also display it on a TV somewhere. We used to use the iRadio section of the protocol quite a bit back a few years ago mainly because you could define fix station presets that were handy when using a Crestron keypad to play the client's favorite radio station. But really, it is pretty easy to figure out the protocol because when using IR, it will spit out the RS232 codes when you select the IR function. If you ever open up a Denon or Marantz receiver/preamp, they have the same HDMI board in them (that is were the action is) with just different firmware. Here is a link to Denon's flag ship receiver: More than likely, it will work with Marantz too.

If I ever did get a request to do an AM/FM tuner integration, I would most likely just display it on a TV somewhere and use IR cursor commands to navigate the menu. So none of my modules have an updated AM/FM tuner. It has probably been 10 years since used the AM/FM tuner in a receiver mainly because nobody seems to care and usually the receiver is located in a rack somewhere with very poor radio reception. Most of the changes that have occurred are in the tuner section of the protocol. Hi Chris, The Denon/Marantz protocol hasn't changed much over the years but Denon does usually post their protocols on their website.
